Children today will hold a dozen different jobs in their lifetimes. Phyllis T. Morgan, an award-winning educator with 50 years in the classroom, shows parents how hands-on skills, taught early, become a child's compass for all of them.
A lifelong teacher.
Phyllis is a New Jersey native whose passion for education rests on a simple conviction: school's purpose is to help every student identify their interests and design a pathway into the future. Across a 50-year career, her classrooms and schools were built to create experiences and skills, guided by a belief she credits to Confucius: "Any task should incorporate the practice of at least three skills, or it's not worth the time of the learner."
Her last school, Palmquist Elementary, became Oceanside's first board-approved STEM school, centered on advanced farming methods including hydroponics, organic farming beds, and aquaponics. Students didn't just grow crops; they built a business model, selling their harvest to the school, parents, and community restaurants. Through tight collaboration with parents and teachers, the school offered up to 60 afterschool programs across three six-week sessions each year, earning two Distinguished School Awards along the way.
Today, Phyllis lives on her boat in Coronado, California. She continues to write for educational programs and share her book, Skillful Futures, with readers. Her passion for preparing students for an ever-changing future is felt by her audiences as she speaks to educators, parents, and student groups.
